Merchiston, Edinburgh

To renovate and redefine this period property after flood damage.

Following a flooding at this traditional basement-level apartment within Edinburgh, the client embarked on a complete renovation and redesign. From the master suite at the entrance, through the hallway to the rear of the apartment, Gopherwood was tasked with all elements of the project’s refit, design and day-to-day management.

A wall of floor-to-ceiling wardrobe cabinetry in the master suite compliments the period of the property, with shelves on the opposite wall of the room. The client likes to read in the bay window and was keen to make the most of the light pouring in. We kept the finish light and neutral with accents from existing art pieces, furniture and foliage.

The Gopherwood team hand-made the galley kitchen, and it features a hidden pantry, storage, and signature LED strip lighting, ensuring a well-lit and usable space. The units are finished with spray lacquer and natural wood stain for contrast.

The living room has a custom-built panelled wall unit across one wall featuring LED shelf accents, a bar unit in one corner and patio doors overlooking the garden space. A custom folding card table was also requested, built and supplied.

The main bathroom is an escape from the city for the client, featuring signature slim wood panelling, two sizes of porcelain tile and a vanity mirror alongside a modern sleek bathtub and separate shower. The metalwork is a matte black finish, adding to the sophisticated style created in the redesign of the space.
